Sermon Notes: Serving with the Love of Christ (1 Tim 3:8-13)

Serving with the Love of Christ

1 Timothy 3:8–13

1 Timothy 3:13 says, For those who serve well as deacons gain a good standing for themselves and also great confidence in the faith that is in Christ Jesus.

I. A Faith That Doesn’t Serve is Useless to Jesus

Galatians 5:6 says, For in Christ Jesus neither circumcision nor uncircumcision counts for anything, but only faith working through love.

1 Corinthians 13:2. Paul says, And if I have prophetic powers, and understand all mysteries and all knowledge, and if I have all faith, so as to remove mountains, but have not love, I am nothing.

A faith that doesn’t express itself in love is nothing.

1 John 3:17, But if anyone has the world’s goods and sees his brother in need, yet closes his heart against him, how does God’s love abide in him?

Look at James 2:14, What good is it, my brothers, if someone says he has faith but does not have works? Can that faith save him?

James 2:14b says, Can that faith save him?

Easy believism occurs via an emaciated Gospel that offers Christ as Savior, but not Lord.

II. Jesus Christ Came into the World Not to be Served, but to Serve

Mark 10:45 says, For even the Son of Man came not to be served but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many.”

Jesus was the opposite of a “consumer Christian.” He came not to be served, but to serve.

Service was not something that Jesus added to His life; service was His life.

John 4:34 says, Jesus said to them, “My food is to do the will of him who sent me and to accomplish his work.

Luke 22:27, I come among you as one who serves. Jesus’ entire life was one of service. It is the nature of Jesus.

III. Faith That Unites Us to Christ will Show Itself in Serving

Psalm 3:3, But you, O Lord, are a shield about me, my glory, and the lifter of my head.

2 Corinthians 5:15, and he died for all, that those who live might no longer live for themselves but for him who for their sake died and was raised.

1 Thessalonians 1:2–3 says, 2 We give thanks to God always for all of you, constantly mentioning you in our prayers, 3 remembering before our God and Father your work of faith and labor of love and steadfastness of hope in our Lord Jesus Christ.

1 Timothy 3:13 says, For those who serve well as deacons gain a good standing for themselves and also great confidence in the faith that is in Christ Jesus.
