In today’s message, Praying Our Church to its Potential, I explained what the Bible says about prayer for a body of believers.

John 17:9-24; Acts 4

Luke 19:46, My house shall be a house of prayer,’ but you have made it a den of robbers.

 

1 Corinthians 6:19, Or do you not know that your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit within you, whom you have from God? You are not your own,

 

I. What Jesus Wants for Church of the Highlands

 

John 17:9, 13–14, 17–24 says, I am praying for them. I am not praying for the world but for those whom you have given me, for they are yours.  13 But now I am coming to you, and these things I speak in the world, that they may have my joy fulfilled in themselves. 14 I have given them your word, and the world has hated them . . .  17 Sanctify them in the truth; your word is truth. 18 As you sent me into the world, so I have sent them into the world. 19 And for their sake I consecrate myself, that they also may be sanctified in truth. 20 “I do not ask for these only, but also for those who will believe in me through their word, 21 that they may all be one, just as you, Father, are in me, and I in you, that they also may be in us, so that the world may believe that you have sent me.22 The glory that you have given me I have given to them, that they may be one even as we are one, 23 I in them and you in me, that they may become perfectly one, so that the world may know that you sent me and loved them even as you loved me. 24 Father, I desire that they also, whom you have given me, may be with me where I am, to see my glory that you have given me because you loved me before the foundation of the world.

 

A. That People Would Sense the Glory of God

 

John 17:22, The glory that you have given me I have given to them,

 

B. That We Would Follow the Word of God

 

John 17:8,  For I have given them the words that you gave me, and they have received them . . .

 

Isaiah 55:11 says, so shall my word be that goes out from my mouth; it shall not return to me empty, but it shall accomplish that which I purpose, and shall succeed in the thing for which I sent it.

 

C. That We Would Be United in the Love of God

 

John 17:21a says, that they may all be one, just as you, Father, are in me, and I in you,

 

D. That We Would Go forth in the Mission of God

 

E. That We Would Experience the Joy of God

 

John 17:13 says, But now I am coming to you, and these things I speak in the world, that they may have my joy fulfilled in themselves. 

 

II. What Can Happen When A Church Prays?

 

Acts 4:31 says, And when they had prayed, the place in which they were gathered together was shaken, and they were all filled with the Holy Spirit and continued to speak the word of God with boldness.

 

A. The Presence of God is Expressed

 

Acts 4:31 says, And when they had prayed, the place in which they were gathered together was shaken, and they were all filled with the Holy Spirit and continued to speak the word of God with boldness.

Genesis 28:16, Surely the LORD is in this place, and I was not aware of it.

Acts 4:24a says, And when they heard it, they lifted their voices together to God . . .

 

B. The Power of God is Experienced

 

C. The Purpose of God is Engaged

 

Acts 4:33 says, And with great power the apostles were giving their testimony to the resurrection of the Lord Jesus, and great grace was upon them all.
