1 Timothy 6:11–16

 

2 Timothy 1:7, for God gave us a spirit not of fear but of power and love and self-control.

 

1 Timothy 5:23, Paul says to Timothy, No longer drink only water, but use a little wine for the sake of your stomach and your frequent ailments.

 

MAN OF GOD (v. 11)

 

2 Timothy 3:16–17, 16 All Scripture is breathed out by God and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, and for training in righteousness, 17 that the man of God may be complete, equipped for every good work.

 

God does not tread us down by branding us according to our nature; God lifts us up by calling us to be who we are in Jesus Christ.

 

1 Timothy 6:11b says, Pursue righteousness, godliness, faith, love, steadfastness, gentleness.

 

I. Make A Confession of Faith (vv. 12–13)

 

1 Timothy 6:12 says, Fight the good fight of the faith. Take hold of the eternal life to which you were called and about which you made the good confession in the presence of many witnesses.

Matthew 16:15b–16, Jesus asked, “But who do you say that I am?” 16 Simon Peter replied, “You are the Christ, the Son of the living God.”

 

Matthew 20:28, My Lord and my God.

 

1 Timothy 6:13, I charge you in the presence of God, who gives life to all things, and of Christ Jesus, who in his testimony before Pontius Pilate made the good confession,

 

Luke 23:3, And Pilate asked him, “Are you the King of the Jews?” And he answered him, “You have said so.”

 

II. Embrace A Calling (vv. 13–14)

 

1 Timothy 6:13–14 says, 13 I charge you in the presence of God, who gives life to all things, and of Christ Jesus, who in his testimony before Pontius Pilate made the good confession, 14 to keep the commandment unstained and free from reproach until the appearing of our Lord Jesus Christ,

 

A. The Character You Should Pursue (v. 11)

 

1 Timothy 6:11 says, But as for you, O man of God, flee these things. Pursue righteousness, godliness, faith, love, steadfastness, gentleness.

 

B. The Battle You Should Fight (v. 12a)

 

1 Timothy 6:12a says, Fight the good fight of the faith.

Whenever you take your stand with the Lord Jesus Christ, you will always find yourself in conflict with the currents of the culture.

 

C. The Life You Should Gain (v. 12b)

 

1 Timothy 6:12b, Take hold of the eternal life to which you were called and about which you made the good confession in the presence of many witnesses.

 

verse 13a, I charge you in the presence of God, who gives life to all things,

 

III. Anticipate Christ’s Glorious Return (v. 14)

 

1 Timothy 6:14 says, to keep the commandment unstained and free from reproach until the appearing of our Lord Jesus Christ,

 

Old Testament

John 12:41, Isaiah said these things because he saw his glory and spoke of him.

 

Isaiah 6:5, “Woe is me! For I am lost; for I am a man of unclean lips,”

 

New Testament

Revelation 1:16b–17a, John says, his face was like the sun shining in full strength 17 When I saw him, I fell at his feet as though dead.

 

Matthew 5:8, Blessed are the pure in heart, for they shall see God.

 

1 John 3:2, When He appears . . . we shall see Him as He is.
