2 Peter 3:10-14
What is wrong with this world?
God said to Adam, cursed is the ground because of you; Genesis 3:7
I. The World is Completely Hopeless
But the day of the Lord will come like a thief, and then the heavens will pass away with a roar, and the heavenly bodies will be burned up and dissolved, and the earth and the works that are done on it will be exposed. 2 Peter 3:10
A. Ponder Your Priorities
Since all these things are thus to be dissolved, what sort of people ought you to be in lives of holiness and godliness, 2 Peter 3:11
Do not lay up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moth and rust destroy and where thieves break in and steal, 20 but lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust destroys and where thieves do not break in and steal. Matthew 6:19-10
If everything in this world is going to pass away, then wisdom says that you and I should seek to live radically God-centered lives.
Make it your mission in life to invest yourself in things that will count for eternity.
B. Assess Your Attitude
But according to his promise we are waiting for new heavens and a new earth in which righteousness dwells. 2 Peter 3:13
waiting for and hastening the coming of the day of God 2 Peter 3:12a
Some commentators equate the ‘day of God’ with the ‘day of the Lord,’ but they are not synonymous expressions. The ‘day of God’ refers to the eternal state when God will have permanently subdued all of His enemies. -John MacArthur
And again, “I will put my trust in him.” And again, “Behold, I and the children God has given me. Hebrews 2:13
The day when all of God’s children will be gathered, from all over the world, will be awe-inspiring.
II. Jesus Christ Offers Glorious Hope
Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation. The old has passed away; behold, the new has come. 2 Corinthians 5:17
the heavens will be set on fire and dissolved, and the heavenly bodies will melt as they burn! 13 But according to his promise we are waiting for new heavens and a new earth in which righteousness dwells. 2 Peter 3:12b
the creation itself will be set free from its bondage to corruption and obtain the freedom of the glory of the children of God. Romans 8:21
righteousness dwells 2 Peter 3:13
The old has passed away; behold, the new has come. 2 Corinthains 5:17b
Therefore, beloved, since you are waiting for these, be diligent to be found by him without spot or blemish, and at peace. 2 Peter 3:14
Beloved, we are God’s children now, and what we will be has not yet appeared; but we know that when he appears we shall be like him, because we shall see him as he is. 3 And everyone who thus hopes in him purifies himself as he is pure. I John 3:2-3
